WRITING TEST • SILONG CHHUN
Office of Governor Jay Inslee

You are staffing the governor for a visit to a recently-completed affordable housing apartment community. The buildings were constructed with several clean energy and energy efficiency features such as solar power and energy efficient appliances and are interesting examples of the kinds of clean building features that new policies and funding are promoting. The project was funded partly by grants from the state. While touring the project, the governor meets several residents who share their personal stories, including a single father of two young children and a refugee family. Affordable housing is one of the governor’s top legislative priorities.

In a paragraph or two, describe what kind of content you would ideally want to create and share about this kind of visit. Create a sample Facebook or Instagram post and include examples of the types of photos or videos you would include in the story (feel free to pull photos from any online source).

(For background and reference you can review the housing section of the governor’s most recent
budget proposal and highlights documents or posts about him visiting similar developments.)

(NOT A REAL FACEBOOK POST - MOCKED UP IN PHOTOSHOP)
For an onsite visit like this one, the first thing I would do is consult with the team about our expectations and the goals of the visit so we’re on the same page. I would suggest that the story centers around the residents and how the governor’s policies plays a role in uplifting them into a secure and safe environment so they can continue to thrive.

I will bring my camera to capture a series of photos and video clips for a highlight recap reel of the visit.

Utilizing the "stories" feature on FB/IG - We can tell a story in "a day in the life of" format that may pique interest and provide an intimate view of the governor’s day to keep our constituents informed and excited of our visit. To round out this on-site campaign, we can publish an official FB/IG post that can link to a blog for a complete summary of the visit.

  • Priority 1: Photos of Gov. Inslee engaging with and listening to residents would be used as the lead image for an Instagram carousel and cross-posted on Facebook shortly after the visit as an update. While we're driving from the site, I can transfer photos from my camera to my phone to edit and post.
  • Priority 2: While taking photos, I'll also record video clips for a highlight reel as part of this visit's series, which will be posted the next day or to use as the content to direct people to the blog of the visit.
  • Priority 3:  Instagram/Facebook Stories - Before, during and after the visit I’d propose we hit the stories hard on the day of the visit to take our audience with us through the trip. This can look like:
    • Gov. Inslee traveling to site (photos and/or video)
    • Arriving to the site (photos and/or video)
    • Engaging with residents ( (photos and/or video)
    • Farewell (photos and/or videos)
*Regarding priority #3, I am concerned that revealing the governor's location in "almost real" time can pose a potential security risk. What is the policy on this?

SOCIAL MEDIA COPY:

Today, I saw firsthand the positive impact of the state's clean energy and energy efficiency
initiative and the result of the project's grants in part from Washington State. However, the most inspiring part of the visit was meeting the residents of the recently-completed affordable housing apartment community. I heard the stories of a single father of two young children and a refugee family who had found a home in the community.

The single father of two young children spoke of how their new home had allowed him to make a fresh start for his two young children, and the family who fled danger shared how they were able to feel safe and secure in their new home.

These real-life accounts of how this had changed their lives had an emotional resonance that was impossible to ignore. Today’s visit is a testament of the commitment to legislative priorities and dedication to ensure that all residents have access to safe and secure living conditions.
