Sincere thank you to the City of Tacoma and the council for the opportunity to interview as a finalist for Position 7. It is truly an honor, and I appreciate the amendment to include six rather than four finalists - it illustrates that the city is aware of the powerful and passionate community members who deserve to be heard.
A round of applause for the 43 community members who chose to step forward and apply during one of our city's most difficult times. Putting yourself out there takes courage, humility, and a lot of passion, and we should be proud of ourselves.
To the finalists - TACOMA IS LUCKY TO HAVE YOU.
Above all, I'd like to express my gratitude to everyone who messaged me, submitted a statement, or took the time to write a letter of support. The process was eye-opening and inspiring, demonstrating the outpouring of support for my candidacy and efforts to represent Tacoma's Asian-American community in this capacity. I wouldn't have the strength or motivation to serve if it weren't for your continuous support. I owe you all coffee!
Finally, congratulations to Council Member Olgy Diaz for making history as the first Latinx to serve on the City Council!!

As of June 23, 2022, Tacoma City Council At-Large Position 7 is vacant, and the current council will appoint the next council member to fill the seat. I've been chosen to give a 3-minute presentation on July 19 at 6:20 pm on why I'm the best candidate for At-Large Position 7, and requesting your support.
Because this isn't a traditional election process for the seat, I'm reaching out to the community for a vote of confidence. I can spend 3 minutes to tell them why I THINK I'm the best candidate, but the voice of the community is more important. It would be an honor to share your words of support during my presentation to the council if you could tell the City of Tacoma why I would be the best candidate to represent Tacoma.

Silong is community-minded and broadly defined! He’s thoughtful, funny, and civically engaged. I admire how he brings the stories of our community to light, raising awareness through a thoughtful and socially, historically conscious perspective.

Silong's dedication and service to the city of Tacoma has been ongoing and consistent. A long list of community engagement, a voice of strength and spirit for our community, Silong has the dedication necessary to make tangible change. He is the kind of person we need on City Council. I'm backing him 100%!

LIFE CHANGING!!!!!
My name is Sokha, I’m 46 years old and a father to (3) beautiful children. I’ve never personally met Silong or spoken with him on the phone. All our conversations have been through Facebook Messenger, however, he’s impacted my life in ways that I wouldn’t have thought were possible.
I reached out to Silong in 2018 regarding my deportation - He was very helpful with filling out paperwork and pointing me in the right direction. His guidance led me to meet some very wonderful people who assisted me with granting a Washington State Pardon from Governor Inslee (May/2021), overturning my order of deportation (Sept/2021), and my path to US Citizenship (Q3/2022).
The chances of the three following events occurring were very improbable without Silong’s assistance and guidance. Finally, after 20-plus years of worry about deportation, I no longer have to live thinking about being removed from the United States.

John Taylor Matthews, Insurance Agent
Silong would be the best candidate for most positions in government. He cares about the city of Tacoma and surrounding areas and has represented this by already helping and speaking out for the people of this town. He’s mentored many of us just through watching his actions of kindness. He’s also helped many in the community start and continue their dreams. Alongside this he is an established businessman and has his own home in order; if you’re from Tacoma, it makes the most sense to have Silong on the city council because it feels like he is already there.

I think Silong would represent a good cross-section of our city. He’s thoughtful, articulate, and has his finger on the pulse of the best of our young families and artists. I think Tacoma needs his perspective.

Silong is rooted in Tacoma, connected to the city, and cares about the city and the people that call Tacoma home. I have no doubt he will hold the position with integrity, transparency, and with an open dialog in support of the community.

Teresa Starr, Local small business owner
I believe Silong to be the absolute most appropriate, qualified and deserving of this position, and beyond. Being Tacoma-born, I’ve yet to meet anyone with as much drive, and dedication to making our already beautiful city a better place to be. For everyone.
My favorite attribute of Silong’s is his ability to genuinely connect with all members of the community. No matter who you are or where you’re from, he will welcome you.
I sincerely hope to have our city represented by more people like Silong.
Sincerely,
Teresa S.

Nicollette Roe, Interim Senior Program Manager - Northwest Education Access
Mine and Silong's families come from the same humble beginnings starting out in the Salishan community, which is not very different than many immigrant families' stories. I've seen him standing up for the most marginalized in our city and have no doubt that he would center the voices of and do what it best on behalf of all constituents as a council member. His life experience and values show that we can trust Silong and I wholeheartedly give him my support!

Silong is a true representation of what a global citizen looks like, especially for Tacoma - if not, for the entire Pacific Northwest. As a social media admirer of Silong (I haven't personally met him yet), his passion for Tacoma and its citizens is evident in the work he's involved in and around the city.
He wears gratitude on his sleeve, proud of where he came from as a Cambodian refugee, to where he's headed as a Council Seat 7 candidate.
His work is rooted in integrity and intention, remaining clearheaded when faced with opposition. He's an advocate for fairness, equality, diversity, and transparency, and most of all he is THEE voice of change for this generation.

Christine DeLeon, Retired Military
I grew up here in Tacoma, my Father retired from the Army here, and I've always considered it Home when I was serving in the Air Force for 21.5 years. Once retired I moved back to my beloved city. During that whole time, Silong was serving here, silently, with no motive other than want to see his city grow and come together. He has always been vocal about the local politics and getting others involved. He's passionate about our Community. No matter where I was stationed or deployed to I always saw that he's been active in his community pushing for everyone to have a voice, because he loves Tacoma. This is heartwarming to see when you're away from home... While I was serving and dealing with war, death, and all the things that come with it. He was here fighting for my city as a private member of the city He's already gone above and beyond than most citizens do and he forever has my gratitude and respect for that.
I grew up not too far from where Silong did. Went to school with him. He's always been honest, kind, inclusive, and smart. And now, has also raised an amazing family right here in the same town. He is not a stranger, he's a local, he grew up here and now his children are growing up here. Who better to help lead this city than him?
I believe it would be doing an injustice to Tacoma by not choosing Silong to fill this position.
Thank you for your time.

I believe Silong is the perfect candidate for an at-large position because he represents such a wide swath of the greater Tacoma community. In the time we’ve been acquainted I’ve learned so much through his intentional and unintentional advocacy and outreach. His deep roots in the Khmer and east Asian community, old school Salishan and east side community, hip hop, LGBTQ+, BLM, women’s rights, immigration, higher education - the list goes on. I don’t think there is a more qualified person to represent our city and our communities in the town. Good luck Silong!

Silong has proven to me personally on many occasions how selfless and kind-hearted he can be. Very honest and authentic, never misses a chance to lend a helping hand if he can. He’s provided me with opportunities that I wouldn’t have come across otherwise, with the sole purpose of seeing the members of his community flourish. I believe he’d be a great candidate for a Tacoma City Council position.

Latasha Ware, Executive Assistant / Policy Analyst
I met Silong when we both worked at Tacoma Community House (TCH). During his time at TCH, Silong not only did his assigned duties but also became an intricate part of the organization. Silong merged his experiences, passion for serving his community, advocacy work, and amazing communication skills.
My experience working with Silong at TCH is a perfect metaphor for how he lives his life. Community advocacy is not a passion for Silong but a fundamental value. Silong uses his voice to amplify those of others in our community. His reach is not limited to the Tacoma Khmer community. Everyone knows Silong. He is not just a colleague, he is not just an advocate - he is a friend of the Tacoma Community. His work is always intersectional, touching on topics of racism, colorism, deportation of our Cambodian population, and barrier removal/access.
Without Silong, non-profits like TCH wouldn't have better facilities to serve their clients. Without Silong, our Citywide programs such as the MLK celebration would not be award-winning as they currently are. Without Silong, there wouldn't be as many community collaborations.
Our Cambodian Community deserves so much more from the City of Tacoma. Cambodian refugees settled here in the 80s/90s yet, we have failed to provide them the safety of this community. We have failed to advocate for our brothers/sisters, we have failed to include our brothers/sisters in our vision planning for this City, and most importantly we have failed to include our brothers/sisters in policy making. Now, what we have are lifelong community members being deported and none of our politicians paying much attention to the issue. It is beyond time to pay attention to this issue!
I am asking that Silong be appointed to the at-large 7 positions, as he has an impeccable reputation within the community, he is extremely analytical, offers creative solutions, and truly cares about the people of this community because he associates with all kinds of people from all walks of life. This City deserves to have more than one Cambodian identifying council member and one Cambodian identifying fireman/woman - because the issues of the Cambodian community have been ignored for far too long. We can and need to do better and that starts with true representation from the people, not just career politicians.

Silong is a long-time contributor to Tacoma. He brings a wealth of knowledge and perspective from his vast experience in sharing others stories in his filmmaking. He is deeply rooted in his community and a perfect choice for our city council.

Silong is for the people, especially his people in the Eastside neighborhoods of Tacoma. Silong has always served Tacoma through music, videography, or community service. He collaborates with well-known people and organizations for change in mind. He’s a good aspect to Tacoma and the perfect candidate for council.

Ricky Haneda, User Researcher at Meta/Photographer
Silong has a genuine and authentic dedication to the city. Rarely do you see the type of passion he possesses, and he tirelessly attempts to tell important stories of Tacoma. He cares for others and one of the people that is easy to open up to. Also, as one who does some photography on the side, I see that the way he goes about some of his work (some of which is heavily photography/videography) clearly is true to himself AND the story he tries to tell. He provides a way for the people of Tacoma to remain connected in a way that is needed now more than ever. In the age of social media, where we are driven to extremes and not see other perspectives, Silong's passion brings a level of authenticity to relationships. As a council member, I believe this passion will only be given more fuel as he is able to do more to a city that he loves and cares about.

Alison Beason, Governor’s Sector Lead | DIRECTOR OF LIFE SCIENCE AND GLOBAL HEALTH
I worked for the City of Tacoma for 2 years in the Department of Equity and Human Rights. During my tenure, I created the Equity Map and the first Commission on Immigrant and Refugees Affairs. I had the honor to select the first Commissioners and Silong Chhun was the very first Commissioners to be selected. During my stay, he showed great leadership and an understanding of the pulse within the community. Not just representing the immigrant and refugees' perspective but from the East Side, a lifelong community advocate, and the frustrations of a generation. I support Silong's candidacy. The Council needs this representation to adequately represent the community at large. I have over 20 years of public service from local (Port of Seattle, Pierce County Council and City of Tacoma) to federal (Bush and Obama administrations). I serve the public to make sure the systems change and work for the people. Silong is the ideal candidate and the people I want to honor and serve. To see him in office would make my life's work, worth the efforts I have made to change the system. He has demonstrated grassroots community service and leadership for a voice that is silenced throughout history.

He is from Tacoma and grew up on the Eastside and attended all the school in Tacoma. I think he is the best candidate because he know so much about Tacoma and grew up here. He is so involve with the community and have done so many work for the community. Silong knows how it is to be raise in Tacoma and knows what is going on and he has so many ideas on how we can tackle what is going on in Tacoma. He will be the best candidate for he is a Tacoma native. He is also bilingual and a lot of people look up to him especially my son. Pick Silong and you will not regret it.

I support Silong to serve as a member of the Tacoma City Council. Silong is a long-time resident of Tacoma and raised his family here in town. He has always shown he cares about this city and its people by making time to highlight important social issues that are affecting our community. His voice and connection to his community will be a great representation for our community, especially for the API communities, which is not greatly represented at the City of Tacoma. Tacoma will be a better place if Silong has an opportunity to serve and have a voice at the table.

Silong is one of the most innovative people I have ever encountered. He is also an exceptionally engaged and loyal community member. He wants to make places better than when he found them, but he does so through collaboration, inclusion, empathy, and communication. And while this is a bonus, it's a pretty big one: he understands how to talk to a variety of audiences on every prominent media platform. To me, that means he's an ideal person to make local government and governance transparent for constituents so that voters and community members feel better informed and more confident in their participation and representation.

Silong is truly invested in Tacoma and wants to see it thrive. I'm confident that he will bring the voice of many who feel underrepresented and ignored by the council.

Community first, Silong has always demonstrated this quality well before he started working in the community. Grassroots Cambodian Pilar of the EastSide, of Tacoma!

Plenty of people will tell you they care about community, but few people show up for community in the way Silong does. And Silong isn’t just showing up — he’s driving and shaping community. Creating community events. Stepping in where he sees gaps and quickly activating others to join him because they trust him and have seen firsthand, time and time again, that community is more than a concept to Silong; it’s a way of life. Plus, he has magical super powers! Pretty sure he has more hours in the day than anyone else… How else could he accomplish the level of good he does?

Silong is a passionate advocate for the community and is able to unite differing points of view. He is an artist and this council needs more diversity in the way problems are solved - he can bring that.

If I ever meet another person named Silong, I would immediately smile and the positive thoughts would begin to flow. Endlessly. Tacoma is in need of advocates who are great listeners, innovative, and connected both across cultures and generations. Silong is all of that and some more. I've lived in Tacoma for over 12 years now and I have had the absolute pleasure of working with Silong, dancing with Silong, and educating the next generation with Silong. All of those interactions with him are both positive and memorable. By having Silong represent Tacoma At-Large Position 7, I am absolutely confident that he will do everything possible to make his tenure positive and memorable for the Tacoma community :)

Silong Chhun is the best candidate for this position because he has so much passion and empathy towards his community, no matter the race or gender if he can help he will. Whether it's advice you're seeking or guidance because youre lost, his willingness to go above and beyond to find the answer shows you just the type of man he is. A trustworthy, upstanding and most importantly consistent type of leader who not only wants to see his community be better but see YOU do better.

Silong demonstrates a great understanding of Tacomas Demographics, issues and being a Tacoma native can provide insight and solutions to any issues that arise as well as create ideas to drive unification and build a community structure. He is a pillar in the khmer community and effectively works to bring justice and support to those families as well. I admire Silong for his appreciation and acceptance of ALL cultures and ethnic groups in Tacoma and highlighting that this is was makes Tacoma, Tacoma. He is undoubtedly the only person I would want to fill this seat.

SALISHAN BABY!!! It’s about time public officials reflected the population and lived experiences they’re supposed to represent. It’s time for Tacoma to radically invest in local community resources and support systems rather than catering to private developers and businesses. It’s about time for creativity, culture, and community, all things that Silong represents and has spent his life embodying.

Tacoma deserves a creative mind on the council. A mind that isn’t harboring larger political ambitions, a mind that stands up for those often overlooked by the power structure, a mind that has both lived the American dream while also experiencing the bigotry that often goes hand in hand with it.

I am proud to throw my support behind Silong Chun for the Tacoma City Council position. While I have only worked with Silong for a short time, I have come to know him as a dependable individual who is a critical thinker, that approaches everything with an open mind. He is a great listener who knows when he needs to step in and take control of a situation or to step back and let others lead. He also understands the Tacoma community having grown up in the Eastside, but having connections with so many areas in our city. I believe he will do an excellent job for our community.

Silong has been a long-time friend of my family and even though I’ve personally known him for a short period of time he has been looking out for me as if I was one of his own. Knowing of him and what he’s done for the community, I would randomly reach out to him for advice on any events I would be creating or directions on who to contact for a certain type of business need. That showed me that no matter who you are, Silong will be there to guide his community at any given moment. I’ve created successful career-building events and have met strong goal-oriented colleagues with whom I’ve built relationships moving forward. Silong is in touch with our time, our needs as a people today, and as a father, he instills those honorable values that will lead to the betterment of future generations!

Silong is for the people, especially his people in the Eastside neighborhoods of Tacoma. Silong has always served Tacoma through music, videography, or community service. He collaborates with well-known people and organizations for change in mind. He’s a good aspect to Tacoma and the perfect candidate for council.

If I ever meet another person named Silong, I would immediately smile and the positive thoughts would begin to flow. Endlessly. Tacoma is in need of advocates who are great listeners, innovative, and connected both across cultures and generations. Silong is all of that and some more. I've lived in Tacoma for over 12 years now and I have had the absolute pleasure of working with Silong, dancing with Silong, and educating the next generation with Silong. All of those interactions with him are both positive and memorable. SALISHAN BABY!!! It’s about time public officials reflected the population and lived experiences they’re supposed to represent. It’s time for Tacoma to radically invest in local community resources and support systems rather than catering to private developers and businesses.

August Tenari, Community Member, Musician & Artist
